Portfolios

So what makes the perfect portfolio?

Well, portfolios or 'books' are as varied and as individual as you are and feedback on the content, structure and format of your portfolio is all part of our extensive interview process.

Your portfolio needs to convey not just your creative talents and skills but also your personal qualities. As such it’s essential that it says only good things about you. Here are some basis things to consider

Do

  • Start with a bang and end with an explosion. Save your best bit 'til last. It may well be the piece that lingers in the memory longer as it may stay open on the table while the interview progresses. Put your next best piece at the front to get things off to a good start.
  • Mix it up. Don't be tempted to clump work together by client or eras. While it appears logical it can make for a boring page turning experience. Take the viewer on a rollercoaster ride through your skills, talents and experience rather than a slow walk up a hill.
  • Show us a bit of rough. Scamps, sketches and early stages of a job give us a great idea of your thought process and clients love to see them too.
  • Print flats of digital work. We do try and look at websites, CD ROMs, etc. in the media they were intended to be viewed in. It is a good idea however to prepare such work as flat storyboards as you'll never know the time constraints or equipment available in an interview.

Don't

  • Over fill it We know every single thing you have ever done has its merits, but try and include bigger jobs or campaigns that show of the range of your skills. 10 or 12 key pieces should do it.
  • Labour a point Sometimes those huge piles of mundane leaflets can be greater then the sum of their parts. Photograph them or comp them together digitally and, Voila! your bread and butter typesetting becomes 'brand execution over a sustained period of activity'.
  • Put in work that isn't yours Chances are we know the agency or have a personal relationship with its true originators and if we don't we know the right questions to catch you out.
