Interviews

‘How do I prepare for my interview?’

We are here to make introductions, big you up, facilitate meetings and negotiate on your behalf, but at the end of the day we can only pass you the ball. We can't score the goals for you. We can help you with any specific questions or worries you have, but here are a few tips to help you make the most of your interview opportunities.

‘Do’

  • Keep yourself calm. Try and relax and don't acknowledge you are nervous or feel the need to fill any natural pauses with inane chatter.
  • Know who you are talking to. Research the company and find out as much as you can about the interviewer including how to pronounce their name properly.
  • Sell yourself. Don't slouch, shrug or be dismissive, interviews are not the time or place to be self-effacing. Never introduce a piece of work with, 'Oh this is just a...'
  • Look the part. Find out the dress code for the organisation and dress accordingly for the role.
  • Arrive early. For extra Brownie points take a notepad and a pen with you, and use them.
  • Be polite. And that means to everyone you encounter there. They'll all have opinions and they all count.
  • Think before you speak. Feel free to ask for clarification before answering a question and take some time to formulate your answers before you speak.

‘Don't’

  • Chew gum, smoke, swear or pick your nose. No matter how informal the interviewer's approach may be don't get too relaxed and let yourself down.
  • Embellish the truth. Answer all questions honestly, but in the best, most positive light.
  • Slag off old or current employers. It is very negative and says a lot about your character.
